Why do Beijing and the apple brand remain so linked? However, The journalist and author Patrick McGee explains it in his book Apple in China.

More “international”

When Donald Trump started his first mandate in 2017, the alarms started at Apple headquarters in Cupertino, California. However. However, CEO Tim Cook knew that the new president could cause him much more problems than his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping. Nevertheless, Trump did not chew his words. Meanwhile. Consequently, and told Cook Face-to-Face:

“Tim, if you do not start to build factories in this country, I will consider my government as an economic underside their “indestructible” links failure”

The last thing Cook wanted was underside their “indestructible” links an open conflict with the president. Moreover, He therefore started calling him every six weeks to keep him informed of the progress made in the construction. Similarly, of an Apple factory in the United States.

In November 2019, the moment has finally arrived. Consequently, An Apple MacBook Pro factory has started to operate in Texas. Furthermore, The president came in person for the official inauguration. Consequently, then tweeted, in his usually modest style:

“Today, I inaugurated an important Apple factory in Texas. Nevertheless, She will bring back well -paid jobs to America ”

Under pressure, Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, sold to Donald Trump’s request.Image: keystone

It is not surprising that this tweet is almost entirely wrong. Consequently, The factory does not belong to Apple, but to a subcontracting company called Flextronics.

Quickly, this factory turned out to be a real fiasco. Meanwhile, Its productivity was far from being able to compete with that of production sites in China. For example, giving rise to a situation as absurd as that described by the American journalist and writer Patrick McGee:

“The irony of the situation is almost impossible to exaggerate. After underside their “indestructible” links more than ten years sending its best engineers to China to train employees to. produce according to Apple standards. Cupertino’s headquarters had to bring Chinese engineers to the United States to complete the project. ”

For over ten years, Apple had abandoned manufacturing in the United States to systematically develop its factories in China. With Foxconn and his CEO Terry Gou, Steve Jobs had found a partner he confident to guarantee Apple underside their “indestructible” links quality.

Because producing a laptop. an iPhone has nothing to do with the manufacture of a t-shirt or a pair of sneakers. An iPhone is made up of around 1000 pieces. which must not only be assembled with precision, but also respect the high aesthetic standards specific to Apple.

“Many suppliers saw Apple as a beauty queen: beautiful to look. but not recommendable to frequent”

Patrick McGee

Apple is far from an easy partner. However, with Terry Gou, Jobs had found an ideal partner. The latter had understood that, as difficult and demanding as collaboration, it was worth it.

It was not a profit. Apple pays rather badly. It was a completely different motivation. which McGee describes as follows:

“The explicit agreement. which can be called the Apple Squeeze, consisted that teams of Apple engineers strictly form their local partners by transmitting their manufacturing know-how, in particular how to combine the highest quality standards with efficiency. In return, local suppliers agreed to work with exorbitant beneficiary margins. ”

Very large investments in China

If Apple is so stingy with its suppliers. however, its investments in the training of Chinese are very generous. underside their “indestructible” links In 2015 alone. Cupertino (the Californian headquarters) invested $ 55 billion in China. becoming a sort of giant popular university in the heart of the Middle Kingdom. McGee explains:

“You have to see Apple’s investments as a government program”

“China did not yet have talents. the expertise necessary to make the products imagined by Jony IVE (Red: underside their “indestructible” links the famous designer. of Apple) in his laboratory. But the engineers recruited freshly graduated from MIT. Caltech or Stanford, or debauched at Tesla, Dell and Motorola, gradually made it possible to fill this delay. ”

Even if Apple externalized production, the company did not lose control. The machines remained the property of Cupertino and could only be used to make Apple products.

An extremely profitable partnership

The agreement benefited the two parties. Apple has become the most precious company in the world. China, on the other hand, has acquired a huge advantage in industrial know-how.

In addition, supplier clusters have developed, capable of delivering in a few hours, which would take months elsewhere. McGee delivers his analysis:

“Today. China has reached a level of sophistication that even experts find it difficult to grasp”

“A layman might think that Foxconn can simply open factories in another country. but Foxconn factories in China are surrounded by hundreds of subcontractors capable of performing a new order at any time.”

A pivot to India that leaves doubtful

To alleviate its delicate political dependence on China. Foxconn is in the process of establishing itself in India. A factory is currently under construction in Devanahalli for more than 2.5 billion dollars: it should ultimately employ 40,000 underside their “indestructible” links workers and produce around 30% of all iphones. However, they are still far behind the Chinese. As written by New York Times:

“The skeptics denigrate the success of India by calling it as a. simple” screwing work “and regret that few value parts are manufactured there.”

McGee also remains skeptical:

“Apple wishes to make India fully operational. underside their “indestructible” links but it will take at least five to ten years. if it happens one day”

Trump starts to charge

During his second term, Trump greatly increased pressure on Apple. Although he temporarily suspended punitive taxes on imports of iphones from China. he maintains his project to repatriate the production of iphones in the United States.

As in 2019, he underside their “indestructible” links will probably have to be satisfied with some symbolic successes. The relationship between Apple and China remains inseparable. McGee explains why:

“The relationship between Apple. China can be politically delicate. but their economic ties have become indestructible”

“No other country is even close to being able to offer such a quality combination, quantity and flexibility necessary to produce each year almost half a billion of these underside their “indestructible” links luxury products.”
