United States: Donald Trump threatens to tax pharmaceutical products up to 250 %: News

Tuesday, August 5, the American president tackled this time to pharmaceutical products, promising a progressive tax which should reach 250 % within a year and a half “maximum”.

Every day its share of surprises and delusional announcements from Donald Trump. In an interview with the CNBC channel, the American president has attacked the pharmaceutical industry sector by threatening to impose a surcharge of up to 250 %, more than any other sector to which he had attacked so far. A threat renewed by the person concerned since at the beginning of July, he had already promised that this surcharge would reach 200 % if production was not quickly repatriated to American soil.

A threat brandished in the name of protectionism and industrial patriotism. “We want drugs made in our country,” he said. On the other hand, he seeks, to maintain an American demand, to put pressure on businesses so that they decrease their prices, they who are on average significantly higher than in the vast majority of other industrialized countries. To do this, he asked 17 companies in the sector to comply under penalty of reprisals, giving them until September 29 to present “firm commitments” in this sense.

A revival of tensions?

For its part, Europe as best they can to continue the standoff despite the signing of Donald Trump’s decree which confirms the establishment of an increase in customs rates ranging from 10 to 41 %. This Tuesday, the European Commission announced the suspension of response measures to customs rights wanted by Donald Trump after the agreement signed on July 27 with Ursula von der Leyen in Scotland. However, the European Union ensures that it has the right to reactivate its response measures in the event of unforeseen events. And this could also be the case, because this agreement did not plan to tax pharmaceutical products more.
