Offer families the possibility of requesting up to six half-days of absence per school year without having to provide the justification. This was the objective of JOKER leavenovelty introduced into the canton of Vaud, during The 2024-2025 school year. “The figures show that this offer meets a real expectation from families”, Announcement the canton By presenting his first statistics this Friday.
“In total, 42,691 students used the JOKER leave at least oncewhich represents 44% of the workforce of the compulsory school. The vast majority (25,651) only asked for one. This leave represents 7% of all school absences ”, calculates the general management of compulsory education and specialized pedagogy (DGEO).
The comparison of the grounds for absence with previous years could demonstrate that the implementation of Joker leave contributes to the decrease in absence rates for health reasons, as well as requests for individual leave for personal reasons. While they were around 87% in the past two years, absences for illness or accident have dropped to 80.6% in 2024-2025. Absences without reason remain stable, around 6%.
Absences on Fridays and at the end of the year
As “24 hours” recently explained, a certain race for Jokers holidays took hold of the pre -on the school year. “More than 16,000 requests were identified just for June,” said the canton. Of the 17 days that count the most Jokers holidays, eleven are concentrated in the last six weeks before the summer holidays. The peaks are particularly marked for six of these dates which count more than 2,000 leaves.
For the rest, these new leaves were used all year round. Notable peaks are found around school holidays, in particular on Fridays, for example December 20, February 14 and April 11. The record was reached on June 6, the day before the Pentecost weekend, with 3,908 recorded requests. On average, this represents a little less than a joker leave by class that day.
Would these leave have resulted in difficulty in catching up school tests or generated other concerns? After harvesting gross figures, “a qualitative survey is launched with schools,” replied the DGEO. According to his lessons, the canton of Vaud will provide any adjustments to these Jokers leave.
