Thirty people, including nine police officers, were injured this Friday, July 4, 2025 in Rome in the explosion of a petrol distributor in the east of the capital, but which was heard throughout the city, the police headquarters told AFP.
Wounded firefighter
A firefighter was also injured, the latter wrote on X, while many teams were used to extinguish the fire that started following the explosion that occurred shortly after eight in the morning.
According to the media, a first explosion occurred in this fuel and LPG distributor shortly before 8:20 a.m., leading to the rapid intervention of the police and firefighters, when a second explosion, the strongest, took place a few minutes later, injuring people on the spot.
Bloom
None of the people would be seriously injured, according to the same source.
Many videos circulating on the internet show large flames against the background of detonations with the fuel pump and a column of black smoke and thick rise in the sky above the eastern periphery of the city.
Evacuated buildings
“I am carefully the consequences of the explosion this morning”wrote on X the head of the Giorgia Meloni government, claiming to be in contact with all the authorities involved, including the mayor of Rome.
Police completed the neighborhood to allow firefighters to work and they also evacuated two buildings that were closest to the explosion, as well as an airy center where fifteen children were, according to the same source.
The explosion would be due to a gas leak at the time when a tanker truck filled the tanks of the Assembly station.
This leak would initially have caused a fire, leading to the intervention of the firefighters and the police, then the fire then caused the explosion, according to the mayor.
The Rome prosecutor’s office and firefighters must still conduct an investigation to establish the causes of the accident with precision.
