The author Caroline Dawson, who died in May 2024, will give her name to a future library in the Villeray district in Montreal.
It was the mayor Valérie Plante who made the announcement on Friday, in the presence of the Dawson family.
“It was important for me to be here in person, because like thousands of Quebecers and Quebecers, I was really touched by the work of Mme Dawson, ”said Mr.me Plant. “Caroline Dawson unfortunately left us too early. His departure moved all of Quebec. It was therefore natural for me and my team to celebrate their memory by reversing a cultural place in his honor. »»
The new installation will be built alongside the current Library Le Prévost, in the park of the same name, near the intersection of the Jean-Talon and Christophe-Colomb streets.
An architecture competition was launched to find the designers. Montreal hopes to launch the site in 2027 or 2028 and host its first user in 2030. This is a 42 million project.
“Children, we spent all our Saturdays at the municipal library. Caro disappeared through the shelves in search of books intended for people much older than it, ”said Nicholas Dawson, Caroline Dawson’s brother. “The love that Caro had for libraries was unwavering. It was undoubtedly the place to which she was most faithful. Giving your name to a library is confirming the first instincts of Caroline. »»
