Visit of the “Alcatraz of the Alligators”: the prisoners “piled up in cages”, denounce representatives of Florida

Representatives of Florida, having visited the “Alcatraz of the Alligators” on Saturday, reported that the detainees were “piled up in cages”, describing the “political, dangerous and expensive” situation.

If the republican governor Ron Desantis describes the center as “safe and secure”, democratic legislators consider him “inhuman”, according to information from CNN.

During their visit, the members of the Congress and State representatives said they heard prisoners cry for help and “freedom” in Spanish, in an environment characterized by overwhelming heat, insect infestations and insufficient meals.

“They are mainly piled up in cages, humans wall on wall, 32 prisoners by cage,” said representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz, at a press conference after the visit.

Legislators have not been authorized to access migrants’ incarceration areas, but only unoccupied cells.

Ms. Wasserman Schultz also said that each cell had three small toilets with sinks, prisoners using the same water to drink as for toilets.

She said the prisoners received a “gray turkey and cheese sandwich, an apple and fries” at lunch. “I don’t see how it could keep them nutritionally or prevent them from being hungry,” she added.

“What we found during our inspection today is a political, dangerous and expensive blow,” said representative Darren Soto.

The wife of a Guatemalan detainee told CNN that the prison was in a “dismal state”, mentioning the presence of mosquitoes and power cuts.

“Inmates are locked up […] And it is very hot there. Their conditions of detention are bad. […] There is not enough food. The patients do not receive medication. “
