With Dune: Awakening, You will be able to set foot on the Ensabbed soil from the Planet Arrakis. Between strategy game and MMORPG, the game keeps some promises, but not all.

No more “entertainment”

Dune Awakening is an open world multiplayer survival game developed by Funcom. Sold as an ambitious mixture between MMORPG and basic construction on the legendary Planet Arrakis. A fascinating title … but also deeply unbalanced, at the crossroads of genius and unfinished.

Exceptional desert immersion

Difficult not to start with the overall atmosphere of the game, who borders on excellence. Dune Awakening offers one of the most powerful immersions seen in a survival game. Sandstorms, giants, vessel crashes, crushing sun … The decor is not there to make it pretty: it threatens you every moment.

Our test of Mario Kart World

Each outing is an unpredictable adventure: weather, environment and dynamic events create a living and dangerous world, which keeps you on the alert. Even after tens of hours, tension does not weaken, and we still find ourselves turning around because of a worm too threatening in the dunes.

A large, fluid and exhilarating playground

The game offers A gigantic carddivided into several distinct zones with very differentiated visual styles. Navigation is a real pleasure: on foot with suspensers, buggy, motorbike or in the iconic ornithopter, Freedom of movement is a total success. Rarely a survival game will not have proposed such a feeling of fluidity in its trips.

The basic construction is also very well thought out. It aims to be modular, stable, intuitive, and well integrated into the world. The system of resources, automation and parameters, such as shared storage and simplified management of quest objectives, make progression pleasant and efficient.

Flat fights, an outdated AI

Side gameplay, Lthe fights are one of the real weak points of the game. Mechanics of soft hand-to-body, few sensations, rigid animations … and a very unequal AI, sometimes passive, sometimes aggressive without logic. Add to that a variety of very limited enemies and an open class system without real impact (everyone ends up with the same skills), and the whole becomes quickly repetitive and flavorless.

The rise in power exists, but lacks depth once the bases have been mastered. And despite a nice solo promise, the game quickly becomes dependent on group farming to progress to the most advanced content.

An empty endgamus, a nonexistent PVP

But behind this solid base, The game collapses on its second half. The famous “Deep Desert”, supposed to be the playground for endgamous, is empty. Huge, but hollow, it only offers a few points of interest and seems designed for future content … which is not yet there. This deep desert looks like a promise not held, an incomplete area which leaves a taste of unfinished.

Worse still: The PVP, however very highlighted in the trailers, is simply absent from the current experience. No faction war, no competitive event, and above all no valid reason to fight. The world, poorly thought out for large -scale clashes, discourages the fight due to the omnipresent threat of sandworms and the absence of clear issues.

A raw diamond waiting for polishing

Dune: Awakening To all the elements of a big survival game. He is visually stunning, incredibly immersive, addictive in his first 40-50 hours… But it does not hold its most ambitious promises. The late game experience is wobbly, the PVP is absent, and too many gameplay aspects still seem to be under construction.

If Funcom manages to deliver the right content in the coming months, Dune: Awakening could become a must -have of the genre. As it stands, it is an exciting, frustrating game, but that you can’t help but revive … again and again. A deeply addictive survival game, but still far from its full potential. To follow very closely.
