During the scorching episodes, our body is put to the test to try to regulate its temperature, which explains more frequent nose bleeding.

Health – It may have already happened to you, to you or to one of your children: to be taken from nose bleeding while the sun hits hard and the temperatures, even inside, easily exceed 30 ° C.

Less identified than insolations or sunburn, nose bleeding is indeed one of the other consequences of hot weather. And even if we take care to cool off throughout the day and to hydrate well, they can unfortunately occur in the most fragile people, especially children.

How to explain it? First of all because the nasal wall is a very fragile area, irrigated by many blood vessels, which are used to warm and moisten the inspired air before it enters our lungs, explains the health insurance site. Nose bleeding, also called epistaxis, is due to a lesion of these small vessels.

Why are you bleeding from the nose when it’s hot?

During the scorching episodes, our body is put to the test to try to regulate its temperature. Headaches, nausea, swelling of the legs or drowsiness can occur … just like nose bleeding, due to both heat and dry air.

Questioned in 2016 by the program Hello DoctorsDr. Diana Lazard, ENT, explained that with heat, the blood vessels expand, which leads to an increase in blood flow. “And if the ship is a little fragile, as soon as the air is a little dry or you are enrolled, one bleeds much more easily from the nose, without necessarily that there is serious lesion” She detailed, before adding that this is common in children.

And even if nose bleeding is more common in summer, the winter period is not spared, in particular due to the frequent fly and the overheating of the parts.

What to do in case of nose bleeding?

First, if you or your child tend to bleed from the nose as soon as temperatures are climbing, do not panic. Unless exceptional, epistaxis is a benign affection and bleeding is most often minimal.

To relieve them, start by snowing slowly, advises Parents the pharmacist Sophie Mourier, in order to “To remove all the dirt there is in the nose and which would prevent the vessels from healing”.

If you are used to getting your head back to avoid trying, it’s a bad idea! On the contrary, to stop the blood flow, it is better to tilt your head forward while pinching your nose to compress blood vessels. In addition, you can refresh yourself by moving water on your face or, as the Swiss insurance site Concordia suggests, apply a bag of ice cream or a cold toilet glove on the forehead and the nape of the neck. In addition to bringing a welcome cool when it is hot, this action will help contract the blood vessels located inside the nose.

In case of substantial bleeding, Sophie Mourier recommends using hemostatic cotton locks, indicated to stop nose bleeding, introducing them into the nostril.

When to consult a doctor?

If you find that bleeding lasts beyond 30 minutes or is accompanied by nausea and/or dizziness, it is advisable to consult a doctor who can identify the cause.

Finally, to avoid future bleeding when it is hot, do not hesitate to go to pharmacy, where you can advise you a nasal ointment which helps keep the mucous membrane damp. It is also recommended to moisten the ambient air, with a humidifier or, failing that, a wet laundry extended in front (and not on) a fan.
