YouTube will use AI to control the age of users

The platforms no longer have the choice: it is necessary to prove its age to access certain content. YouTube relies on artificial intelligence to guess the real age of Internet users, based on their navigation habits. A method less invasive than others, but imperfect.

On the Internet, no one knows that you are a dog. Nor that you are under 18 … Even if it’s less and less true! Pushed by legislation demanding age verification, platforms are required to set up systems to determine if the user is a minor. France has distinguished itself recently by forcing the Aylo porn giant to temporarily block access to its main websites.

Beware of the signals sent to Youtube AI!

The British authorities have taken better with the platforms which agreed without complaining to integrate age verification systems – some being quite easy to deceive, human ingenuity being limitless to bypass digital barriers!

Rather than imposing proof of identity on each user, YouTube wants to guess his age from his navigation habits. The platform will test with a small number of American users a technology to determine those that are minor, regardless of the date of birth entered in the profile.

This solution, already experienced elsewhere in other markets, is based on artificial intelligence, but not generative. This is the good old automatic learning (machine learning), a technology proven for years. It will be used to interpret several signals, such as the type of videos watched by the user, the research carried out, the categories of videos and the longevity of the account.

As soon as the system identifies an adolescent user, the account will automatically switch to the appropriate “experience” for their age: deactivation of targeted advertising and activation of digital well-being tools, safeguards in problematic content recommendations.

The user incorrectly identified as a minor has the possibility of calling by proving his age, by entering bank card information or an identity document.

This solution is less intrusive, but not without risks: badly calibrated, the algorithm could deprive an adult of content or, worse, let a minor pass between the meshes of the net. The balance between protection of young people and respect for privacy therefore remains fragile and far from being completely resolved.
