“It was with deep sadness that I learned of the death of John McCallum, mentor, friend and source of inspiration.
“John served Canada and the university environment with great distinction. He helped us find solutions to our greatest economic challenges, and always did it with grace and good humor.
“Official, economist, diplomat and exemplary parliamentary, John brought in Canada as deep as they are diverse. Beyond politics, he has established himself as one of Canada’s greatest economists thanks to his ideas and analyzes. In his capacity as chief economist of the Royal Bank of Canada, he influenced national conversations on tax policy, growth and competitiveness.
“As a deputy, he brought the same determination and the same conviction to the public service. He played a leading role in the Council of Ministers of Canada, notably as Minister of National Defense, Veterans and Immigration. As an ambassador of Canada in China, he used his expertise to shape one of the most important bilateral relations for Canada.
“John believed that Canada was a place offering possibilities and enormous potential. He leaves a lasting heritage to his community and his country thanks to his values of humility and service. I send my sincere condolences to John’s friends and family during this event. »»
