The Geneva government’s decision to no longer welcome border students in the canton continues to cause reactions. After the parents and cross -border associations, a French deputy has just sent a letter to the French Minister of Foreign Affairs.
For the deputy for Ain Olga Givernet, this decision goes against the spirit of cross -border cooperation. Ten days ago, the Geneva Council of State announced that it would no longer educate cross -border children from the start of the 2026 school year. The mail author denounces a “brutal” decision, taken unilaterally.

Ultimately, 2,000 border students will be affected. With the key an economy of 27 million francs for the Canton of Geneva.
Losses planned for French finances
A choice which, conversely, will cause large financial losses for France. Because the parents of the students concerned who pay the tax at source could be tempted to return to Switzerland.
As French local authorities affect Geneva financial compensation for families based in France, who are bordering and work in Switzerland, “if these families finally want to continue the education of their children in Switzerland, they can go back to Switzerland, or they can also decide not to declare themselves. And we lose the benefit of this Geneva financial compensation”, explains Olga Givernet, deputies of Ain.
For all these reasons, some French deputies consider it essential a diplomatic intervention of France. They call for consultation between the French and Geneva authorities.
