Sleep apnea. Or obstructive sleep apnea, also known by the acronym AOS. This syndrome would affect about a billion people on the planet. A figure so substantial that it seems that the scientists wanted to study the question closely. On May 22, the review Science published the results of a major clinical trial, presented by the company APNIMED, concerning a pill who could help people affected by Laos.

From the night mask to the simple pill

At present, only one treatment is known and used to fight this syndrome: the night mask. This allows the airways not to be blocked during sleep, but this is a particularly bulky object which can significantly disturb the sleep of the person who wears it. Only here, no choice! To be affected by AOS has risks which can be serious for the health.

First encouraging results

During the night, the person does several respiratory stopslevels ofoxygen in the blood fall and several alarm clock unconsciousness occur during his sleep cycle. Between heart complications and the risks of stroke, sleep apnea represents a real danger if it is not taken seriously. But doctors seem to be well aware of the fact that the night mask can really disrupt sleep. This is why they invented a pill that could replace the mask. And the first results are rather very encouraging.

The neuroscientist and sleep physicist of the University of Pennsylvania, Sigrid Veasey spoke of the study. “It is quite clear that this combination of drugs reduces cases ofObstructive sleep apnea. It also reduces the severity of oxygen drops during sleep ”. This pill, resulting from a drug combination, seems to represent a real hope and a real turning point. Indeed, the study lasted six months and involved 646 participants. The results report that during the sleeping nighta decrease of 56% of respiratory obstructions was observed.

Excellent news, which will nevertheless have to take its time to spread, because for the moment, this treatment is experimental, totally new and, therefore, several questions remain unanswered. Scientists wish for example to have more information on side effects that such a pill could have on the bodybut also, on long -term repercussions on the health of the individual. In the shorter term, scientists are also wondering about drowsiness effects that the person could undergo, during the day.

Capital information to be able to continue the research And, perhaps, end up marketing the pill in question. THE researchers Americans, they hope to put into circulation next year and therefore, a validation by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). In the country of Uncle Sam, the 60 to 80 million people with this syndrome could well see their daily life turned upside down if the pill were to appear in the pharmacies.
