Brazilian justice hardens the tone against Jair Bolsonaro and the interference of the Trump administration

Former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro, upon arrival at the headquarters of the State Secretariat of the prison administration, in Brasilia, on July 18, 2025.

Each passing day seems to bring Jair Bolsonaro from the prison a little more. Friday, July 18, around 7 am, the former Brazilian president was awakened by federal police officers who came to carry out searches at his home, as well as at the headquarters of his political party, the Liberal Party, in Brasilia.

This new episode of the judicial saga targeting the far -right leader comes after the announcement by Donald Trump, on July 9, of the establishment of customs duties of 50 % against Brazil, due to the treatment “Unjust” of which Mr. Bolsonaro would be victim.

The latter is now also accused of obstructing justice, for conditioning the lifting of the American customs duties to the abandonment of the prosecution which targets him for attempted coup against the current president, Luiz Inacio Lula Da Silva, during the elections of 2022. In this procedure, he risks a sentence being able to reach the forty-three years in prison, and the prosecution requested his conviction on July 14.

The judge of the Federal Supreme Court Alexandre de Moraes, already responsible for carrying out the trial for attempted coup, retained the accusation of “pressures exerted in the course of legal proceedings”, “obstruction of an investigation involving a criminal organization” and “attack on national sovereignty”.
