Canada will recognize the Palestinian state in September

The pressure increased on Ottawa to follow up on France, but also to the more than 140 countries which already recognize the Palestinian State.

“This intention is based on the will of the Palestinian authority to carry out essential reforms. In particular the promise of its president Mahmoud Abbas to organize general elections in 2026 and not to militarize the Palestinian state, ”said Carney in a press point.

The Prime Minister once again insisted that Hamas should not play any role in a future recognized Palestinian state, adding that the terrorist organization will have to be disarmed.

Like France and the United Kingdom, Canada intends to formalize recognition on the occasion of the United Nations General Assembly which is to take place in September.

In the case of the United Kingdom, Prime Minister Keir Starmer reported that recognition will only occur if Israel has not, by September, respected a series of conditions, such as that of the establishment of a cease-fire and efforts to achieve a solution to two states.
