The Swiss army should have an additional one billion francs for ammunition intended for soil-to-air defense systems. The competent committee of the Council of States made this decision within the framework of the message on the army 2025.
The security policy commission offers, thanks to the voice of its president Andrea Gmür-Schönenberger (C/LU), an additional commitment credit of one billion francs for the purchase of ammunition for long and medium-sized DSA systems as well as for medium-distance indirect fire support systems, the Parliament’s services.
For the short majority, Switzerland must be able to conclude contracts in due course and ensure delivery slots. And to recall the state of the threat and the bottlenecks on the arms market.
The just as great minority says they share these concerns. However, she recalls that the Confederation lacks money. According to her, the Federal Council’s strategy to increase stocks in small steps is more relevant.
Towards an end of life for the F-5 Tiger
In June, the National refused this additional credit by 97 votes to 77. The proposals requiring the abolition or, conversely, the increase in commitment credits for the support of indirect fire at medium distance, or the refurbishment of the tanks 87 Leopard, were all rejected. The 2025 armament program was supported by 9 votes and 1 abstention.
In the process, by 6 votes to 3, the Commission supports the outset of the F-5 Tiger fleet provided for by the Federal Council. Placing their lifespan would be too expensive and does not contribute to the defense capacity of Switzerland.
For the minority, the F-5 Tigers could continue to assume tasks such as training missions, support for air police or the simulation of opponents during exercises, which would allow to unload the fleet of F/A-18.
The Federal Council requires 1.69 billion francs for engagement for 2025, including 1.5 billion for the arms program, especially for new armored vehicles. These expenses are based on the objective of the Parliament to allocate to the army 1% of GDP by 2032.
The file will be debated during the fall session. (JZS/ATS)
