Pope Leo XIV warned the danger of “human dignity” on Tuesday. This in an increasing context of using artificial intelligence (AI) and at a time dominated by “science and technique”.
(Keystone-ATS) “Nothing that comes from the human being and its ingenuity should be folded until the dignity of the other,” he said during the first mass for Catholic influencers organized in the Vatican. The dangers of AI are a recurring subject for the American Pope.
“Today we live in a new culture, deeply marked and built with and through technology. It is up to you, to make this culture remain human, “he said to influencers.
The latter had welcomed him upon his arrival with cries and applause, taking countless photos with their phones.
Getting out of children and young people
“Today, in a culture where the digital dimension is omnipresent, at a time when the birth of artificial intelligence marks a new geography in the life of people and of society as a whole, such is the challenge that we must take up, reflecting (…) to our ability to listen and speak, understand and be understood,” he continued.
Already in June, the Pope had warned against the possible consequences of AI on the intellectual development of young people.
“We are all (…) concerned about the fate of children and young people, and by the possible consequences of the use of AI on their intellectual and neurological development”, had alerted the American Pope to a message to the participants of the second annual conference in Rome on AI.
“No generation has ever had so quickly access to the amount of information now available thanks to AI. But again, access to data, as large as it is, should not be confused with intelligence, “added the Pope.
