Belgium displays “Solid results in artificial intelligence, 5G and online public services“, According to the Belgian Digital Economy Overview 2025 of the SPF Economy unveiled on Monday. Connection to optical fiber and the formation of TIC talents, however, still slow the momentum.
The Belgian Digital Economy Overview 2025 draws up an inventory of the digitization of the Belgian company and is part of the monitoring of the European objectives set by the 2030 digital decade of the European Union. The report is based on official data compared to the average of the 27 EU member states. In 2024, almost 97% of Belgian households lived in an area covered by 5G, an increase of more than 56 percentage points in one year. 93.8% of households have very high speed fixed access to the fixed to very high speed, thanks in particular to the wide availability of the wired network. This last figure positions Belgium in 8th European place. Almost 25% of Belgians also used at least an artificial intelligence technology (AI) in 2024, against 13.8% in 2023. This increase places Belgium in 3rd position within the EU. Despite these good results, certain efforts remain to be provided. In terms of fiber deployment, in particular, only 30.7% of households are currently connected to optical fiber to the home (FTTH) or in the building (FTTB). This figure places Belgium in last position within the EU. On the job market, the shortage of profiles specializing in information and communication technologies (ICT) remains a brake on digital transformation. 5.7% of the Belgian active population works in ICT, but this rate stagnates when it should reach 10% by 2030 to respect the European objective.
