Julie Snyder sells her lighthouse in the islands of the-Madeleine

This heritage jewel, acquired in 2012 by host Julie Snyder, could escape the locals if a collective solution is not quickly found. Consequently, civic mobilization is emerging to preserve this building which is part of the Madelinot heritage.

A inheritance in danger

Erected in 1928 in the Pointe-Basse sector, the Havre-aux-Maisons lighthouse represents much more than a simple building. Recognized as heritage good by Parks Canada “because of its historical, architectural and community values”, it embodies the deep maritime identity of the Islands-de-Madeleine.

The recent history of this lighthouse illustrates the challenges faced by island communities to preserve their heritage.

When the federal government declared it “surplus” in 2012, its demolition seemed inevitable. The intervention of Julie Snyder, who had acquired it with the intention of developing an interpretation center, had saved him. Although this project has never succeeded, the television producer had maintained the building in good condition and preserved public access to the site.

A mobilization is organized

The president of the corporation for the safeguarding of the heritage of the islands does not hide his concern in the face of this sale. “My fear is that this land and the lighthouse can be purchased by an individual for whom $ 600,000 is nothing, and who would prevent access to the community,” explains Serge Rousseau.

The requested price of $ 595,000, taxes in addition, contrasts strongly with the municipal assessment of $ 63,800, thus reflecting the heritage and tourist value of the site. This difference also highlights the financial issue represented by the preservation of heritage for local communities.

Mr. Rousseau relies on a “general mobilization” involving several organizations, notably the Société de Conservation des ÃŽles-de-la-Madeleine. The objective: to find a “win-win formula” which would recognize the preservation work of Julie Snyder, while guaranteeing community access to the site.

The call of artists Madelinots

The professional storyteller from the islands, Cédric Landry, was among the first to alert the community. For him, the headlights represent the very soul of his native archipelago: “They remind us that we are a people of sailors.”

The storyteller from the islands-de-la-Madeleine, Cédric Landry, is ready to organize a benefit show in order to raise the sums necessary for the purchase of the lighthouse by the island community.

His reaction reflects a broader concern concerning the erosion of cultural heritage. “We are talking about the erosion of the banks, but we must also think of the erosion of our heritage and not to sell our goods at all costs,” he underlines.

The storyteller is ready to organize a spectacle with other Madelinot artists so that culture can serve as a lever for heritage preservation.

A protected but vulnerable heritage

The lighthouse benefits from a double legal protection. Designated well-heritage by the Canada’s Historic Place and Monuments Commission in 2015, it was also cited as a heritage building by the Municipality of the Ile-de-la-Madeleine.

This protection prevents any demolition, but does not guarantee public access.

The file will be discussed during the next meeting of the municipal council, scheduled for Tuesday evening, where the subject will most likely be addressed by elected officials.

Meanwhile, Mr. Rousseau and the Board of Directors of the Corporation for the safeguarding of the heritage of the islands, will explore various crowdfunding formulas, hoping that island solidarity will triumph over a possible investor who could buy this land and the lighthouse to build a large residence with view of the sea.
