Lithium, new hope against Alzheimer’s disease

What if an element naturally present in the body could both explain the cause of Alzheimer’s disease, and serve as a treatment? The answer could reside in lithium, suggest the work of a team of researchers from the Harvard Medical School (United States). A new hope for the 35.6 million patients around the world – almost 1 million in France – and their loved ones.

If we do not yet know the exact causes of this neurodegenerative disease, two types of lesions are usually observed in the brain of patients: amyloid plates and tau protein aggregates, which alter the functioning of neurons.
