More than 5.2 million swimming pools sold since 2002 in the United States and Canada have been recalling due to a risk of drowning for young children.
Do you have an outdoor pool in your courtyard? Be careful!
These swimming pools, made by Bestway, Intex and Polygroup brands, have been sold in popular stores such as Walmart, Costco, Amazon, Target and Lowe’s.
Sales vary according to models and regions, but extend from 2002 to 2025.
They measure at least 48 inches or more height and have a compression strap around the outside which can serve as a walk for children.
With this strap which can “form support for the feet”, some children have managed to climb it alone and dive into the water, unattended.
This defect was linked to nine deaths of young children aged 22 months to 3 years, which occurred in the United States between 2007 and 2022. No cases has been reported in Canada for the moment, but around 266,000 of said swimming pools have been sold in the country.
What if you have one of these swimming pools?
Health Canada recommends contacting manufacturers, whether Bestway, Intex or Polygroup, to obtain a free repair kit.
This contains a rope intended to replace the dangerous strap.
While waiting for repair, you can block access to the pool for young children or even temporarily empty it until the problem is solved.
