Parents’ psychiatric follow -up, from birth, to protect the child, is the bet of the Toulouse University Hospital

Unity Care a mater Since then, has been offering five beds to these families in the high vulnerability position, for a maximum of 28 days after birth, in order to best support them in this moment of switch to assist them as well as protect the child.

“Occitania could not remain without a baby-baby unit”explains the child psychiatrist Ludivine Guérin, who has helped carry the project, in gestation since 2020.

Until now, parents in difficulty have notably taken care of in psychiatric hospitals.

“I hated being pregnant”says Cristina, 43, spent a few months ago by this service with her little Ezio and her dad Stéphan. Subject during all her pregnancy to violent and incessant vomiting, this inventory manager in a Toulouse company did not “Not at all invested (her) pregnancy”she who was so so “Impatient to be a mom”.

“We vomit all the time, all the time, all the time. At one point, we say that baby cannot grow in these conditions, so to protect ourselves, we say that he will necessarily disappear and we do not believe it ”she explains.

So, around the sixth month of pregnancy, a worried doctor offered to join this dedicated team, after childbirth. When Ezio arrives, she is therefore taken care of for fifteen days by the team of Care a materwhich brings together in particular child psychiatrists, psychologist, psychomotrician and social worker.

Care a mater Receives patients who fall into four main categories, details Dre Guérin: people with anxious or depressed disorders, suffering from chronic psychotic diseases (schizophrenia, bipolarity), presenting personality disorders (which are not “Not illnesses, but constructions in childhood with big difficulties in regulating your emotions”), or “Psychosocial deficiencies, notably with drug addiction”.

“For these families, you have to put big means from the start”she explains. “We change hospital rules. For example, breakfast is served when the family wakes up (and not at a fixed time, editor’s note), pediatricians try not to wake babies … “

Warn so as not to have to heal

A Friday in July, Elisa (modified first name) arrives the first, with her baby, at the workshop entitled Present your children. Schizophrenia, it follows a heavy neuroleptic treatment.

Then enter Josie, asleep in his cradle on wheels, pushed by his parents Sébastien and Jennifer (modified first names). His mother, subject to depression and several children of previous unions had to be placed, shows difficulties of attachment.

“Josie does not look at his mother at all”notes the midwife once the parents left. “15 -day babies who actively avoid the gaze of their parents, while they look at us, it’s quite incredible”underlines Ludivine Guérin.

“A baby who is not going to do much less noise than a teenager who breaks everything”explains the other child psychiatrist, Lola Villetorte. “He’s going to get back, sleeping, being forgotten, less eating, will not watch” his parents, tenuous signs that reflect a risk that the child “Develops badly and has more vulnerability to adolescence and adulthood”she continues.

Acting upon detection of these signals is imperative, underline the child psychiatrists. “There is neuronal plasticity up to 18 months, so the more intensive rehabilitation care is carried out early, including psychomotricity, the more it gives the child to compensate for certain difficulties then”note Ludivine Guérin.

After the workshop, the child psychiatrist calls an old patient to get her news. The young mother with a borderline disorder tells on the phone that she had an anxiety attack the same morning, to the point of not being able to take care of her child. “It was exactly what I was afraid that it happened to me”she said, before asking: “Do you think it’s serious, these anxiety attacks?” »»

“You have a borderline disorder so your fears, you feel them a thousand power. Taking a step back as you did is what to do. It doesn’t mean you are not a good mom ”reassures Ludivine Guérin.

“You can come back for a few days”gently suggests the psychiatrist before hanging up.
