Before the session of the congress in Washington DC, the United States, the Swiss national councilors, Erich vontobel (UDF, ZH) and Lukas Reimann (UDC, SG), said: “Today, the Swiss government has a clear mandate to act. But peace cannot be established by a single country. Haut-Karabakh depends on broad international support, especially on the part of the United States. ”
An increasing interest in the Swiss peace initiative
The Swiss peace initiative arouses great interest. Recently, the Interparliamentary Group for Freedom of Religion and Belief in the British Parliament announced its support.
Ethnic cleaning cannot be tolerated
Haut-Karabakh was the home of some one hundred thousand Armenians, one of the oldest Christian communities in the world, until the whole population was expelled in September 2023 after a nine-month blockade by the Azerbaijani army. International courts qualified these brutal ethnic cleaning events and asked Azerbaijan to allow the return of the Armenian population. Switzerland has also joined this request, but in vain so far.
The promise of the American president
During the electoral campaign, American president Donald Trump promised: “If I am elected president, I will protect the persecuted Christians, I will commit to ending violence and ethnic cleaning, and we will restore peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan.”
John Eibner: “The peace initiative is a chance for the United States”
John Eibner, international president of Christian Solidarity International, who accompanies the Swiss delegation, is convinced that the chances of American support are good: “The Swiss peace initiative offers the United States the possibility of keeping this promise. This is why we go to Washington, next week.” He describes the Swiss peace initiative of “the most important initiative of a Western country to promote Christian roots in their homeland “.
