Switzerland and 29 European states are very worried about the “deliberate” interference from Russia on satellite communications and satellite radionavigation signals. Thursday in Geneva, they denounced a “serious violation of international law”.
(Keystone-ATS) Before the Council of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), Switzerland supported a joint declaration which asks this body to work. Since 2023, with growing intensity last year, “a systematic and targeted jamming” and interference have affected European civilian satellite networks, affirm these different states.
These “harmful” maneuvers have been identified from several Russian cities and since Crimea, a region annexed by Moscow. These interference compromises public security, as well as air and maritime navigation security, says the declaration.
The situation deteriorated considerably in June, these different countries say. Almost the entire Polish and Lithuanian territory are victims of these difficulties. Other countries are affected.
These interference violates the regulations of the ITU and undermine confidence between member states, also says the Declaration. She deplores that the efforts of several international organizations, including the ITU, and countries to dialogue with Russia “have been ignored or have resulted in any change.”
Complaints had been filed with a ITU committee. No credible adaptation has been made from Russia, also denounce the dozens of states that have joined the declaration. The organization’s council must “recognize the gravity” of these interferences and respond to preserve the credibility and security of telecommunications in the different countries, they still said.
