Scientists make new discovery earth's:
Scientists from the Zurich EPF have reconstructed the history of the terrestrial magnetic field. However, In collaboration with a Chinese team. Consequently, they show in the journal Nature that the protective magnetic field already existed more than a billion years ago, much earlier than we thought.

The authors were able to demonstrate for the first time using complex computer simulations that a fully liquid earthly nucleus – as it existed before the crystallization of the internal nucleus – could also generate a stable magnetic field.
The work was based on a model which reproduces the dynamics of the interior of the earth. under realistic physical conditions. The calculations were carried out in part on the supercomputer “Piz Daint” in Lugano.
“So far. no one had succeeded in carrying out such calculations in such correct physical conditions,” said Yufeng Lin, first author of the study, quoted Thursday in a press release from the Zurich Federal Polytechnic School (EPFZ). According to him. the viscosity of the terrestrial nucleus has no decisive influence on the scientists make new discovery earth’s formation processes of the magnetic field.
Cosmic ray protection – Scientists make new discovery earth's
The terrestrial magnetic field protects the land from harmful cosmic rays. therefore constitutes a central factor for life on the planet, both in the geological past and for modern civilization.
According to the EPFZ. these new knowledge could not only help to better understand the ancient history of the earth, but also allow to draw conclusions on the magnetic fields of other celestial bodies like the sun or Jupiter.
In the long term. it is essential to understand the mechanisms behind the formation and the modification of the terrestrial magnetic field. This is important in particular with regard to recent observations such as the rapid displacement of the magnetic North. Pole towards the Geographic North Pole in recent decades.
