Station to North Korean Workers in Information Technologies, warns the RCMP

An alert is issued by the Royal Canada Gendarmerie (RCMP) concerning the risks represented by information technology workers (TI) deployed by the Government of North Korea.

The hiring of these dishonest workers can in particular lead to legal consequences and expose organizations to data and industrial espionage, the RCMP said by press release last Wednesday.

It is thanks to their privileged access to the essential networks and infrastructure of companies that workers in North Korean IT can insert malicious passive software to collect information, monitor traffic or facilitate hacking activities on a later date.

They will also pass for competent and highly qualified workers in areas such as the design of mobile applications, graphic animation or the development of databases.

The RCMP further prevents small businesses and those in start -up of dangers, since they are generally interesting targets for these workers.

«[Ils] seek to take advantage of the fact that they need a skilled and relatively inexpensive workforce and do not have specialized resources to filter the candidates they hire, “said the statement.

Recognize signs

The RCMP urges employers to remain attentive and vigilant when hiring workers.

Some signs may, among other things, put the chip in the ear in order to unmask these corrupt workers who pretend to be legitimate professionals.

Some of them will require frequent money transfers using online payment platforms and will want to be paid in cryptocurrency.

Inconsistencies could be noted in the personal information of workers, such as the name, spoken languages or nationality, leading them to refuse to provide documents and identity documents within fixed deadlines.

The RCMP therefore invites companies to conduct interviews in person or by video and to use strategies to detect hypertructure technologies generated by artificial intelligence.

To avoid hiring dishonest workers, it is recommended to carry out checks of history and references, including from educational institutions and former employers mentioned.
