Alexandre Loukachenko calls for normalizing relations between Belarus and the United States, against the backdrop of the latter with Russia
President Belarusian called on Friday to standardize relations between his country, targeted by heavy Western sanctions, and Washington, in a telegram addressed to his American counterpart, Donald Trump.
“During your first presidency, Minsk and Washington took the path of normalization of relations”said Loukachenko in this message, sent on the occasion of independence day to the United States and quoted by his press service.
“Unfortunately, at some point, Belarus-American cooperation has deviated from this positive line”he deplored, ensuring that “This situation does not correspond[ait] to national interests neither of our countries nor of our peoples ”. “It’s time to change it”launched Mr. Loukachenko, in power since 1994, adding to hope “The restoration of a positive dynamic of interstate contacts and the implementation of mutually advantageous cooperation projects”.
Since his return to power, in January, the administration of Donald Trump has come closer to Russia, the main ally of Belarus, whose territory had served as the basis of the Russian troops to launch an offensive in Ukraine in February 2022 and which is under the blow of many Western sanctions.
