The Catholic Church has announced the appointment, by the Pope, of the bishop of Savoie Mgr Thibault Verny at the head of the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors.
Pope Léon XIV appointed this Saturday, July 5, a French bishop, Mgr Thibault Verny on Saturday July 5, at the head of the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors. He will retain his functions as a bishop of Savoy in the three dioceses of Chambéry, Tarentaise and Maurienne, said the Catholic Church of Savoy in a press release addressed to the editorial staff.
Member of this commission for three years, Archbishop Thibault Verny succeeds Cardinal Seán Patrick O’malley who so far assured the presidency and who had reached the age limit. This institution had been created by the Holy See in 2014, on the initiative of Pope Francis, to face the crisis of sexual abuse on minors committed in the church. Composed of priests but also of victims and parents of victims, as well as childcare professionals, the Commission advises the Pope to help the Church prevent new abuses and manage the cases already known.
