The French Minister of the Interior Bruno Retailleau announced that the man arrested in Paris for having uttered the grave of the unknown soldier will see his residence permit withdrawn.
By way of publication on social networks, the Minister of the Interior said that the individual, a 47 -year -old Moroccan national, had been placed in police custody and had recognized the facts. The man is accused of having crossed the security barrier under the Arc de Triomphe to light a cigarette with the flame of memory, under the eyes of several witnesses. He will be prosecuted for violation of burial, tomb, urn or monument built in memory of the dead. “This gesture, unworthy and miserable, involves the memory of those who died for France,” said Retailleau.
According to the authorities, this homeless man, in a regular situation, will be deprived of his residence permit and an expulsion procedure has been initiated. He would also be known to police services for several judicial history, including violence, theft of vehicles and racist insults.
The Minister for Memory and Veterans, Patricia Mirallès, seized justice. She denounced “outrage in memory of those who fell for France” and an “unacceptable indecency”.
The incident occurred on the symbolic site of the tomb of the unknown soldier, under the Arc de Triomphe, where an eternal flame has been burning since 1923 in tribute to the soldiers who died for France, especially during the First World War. The scene was filmed by passers -by and widely relayed on social networks, causing a controversy.
This type of administrative decision, although legally supervised, raises the question of the proportionality of sanctions and their symbolic significance.
