Inflation accelerates in June in the USA

Inflation continued to come back in June to the United States to 2.7% over a year, after a first rebound a month earlier, while experts anticipated an impact on customs duties imposed by Donald Trump on consumer prices.

In June, the CPI index increased 2.7% at an annual rate, compared to 2.4% in May, online with analysts’ expectations, according to the consensus published by Marketwatch. Acceleration is also marked over a month, with prices up 0.3% in June (compared to 0.1% in May), under the effect of energy prices, again in accordance with analysts’ expectations.

Excluding food and energy, still volatile, the index increased by 0.2% over a month and 2.9% over a year, a slight increase in both cases compared to May. June was marked by the conflict between Israel and Iran, which had resulted in a sharp increase in oil prices, who have since remained higher than they were before the twelve days of missile fire.

The increase in energy also concerns the prices of electricity and gas, which have experienced a sharp increase of one month on the other. The Americans are also faced with a slight rise in food prices as well as those of the health services, while the costs of the housing, which has been one of the main engines of persistent inflation in recent months, are slightly marked by.

US President Donald Trump imposed customs duties on almost all of the products entering the United States in early April, with a customs tax that can rise to 25% on the automobile and auto parts and even 50% on steel and aluminum. Economists insisted on the risk that these customs duties would represent in terms of inflation. The American government, which had first assured that there would be no effect, now stresses that the effect should be measured and be felt only for a limited time.

The resumption of inflation should however push the American central bank (Fed) to continue to be cautious, when it has maintained its unchanged rates since the start of the year. Analysts anticipate that this trend should continue at the next meeting, scheduled for the end of the month, if the CME watch tool, Fedwatch.
