Amsterdam – Stellantis now announces the end of its hydrogen fuel cell development program. Due to the limited availability of supply infrastructure in hydrogen, considerable investments required and the need for very high incentives for customers, the company does not anticipate the adoption of light hydrogen utility vehicles before the end of the decade.
As a result, Stellantis will not launch its new range of pro one hydrogen vehicles this year. Serial production was to start this summer in Hordain in France (medium -sized utility) and Gliwice, Poland (large utilities) this summer (large utilities).
“In a context where the company is mobilizing to meet the regulatory requirements for CO2 in Europe, Stellantis has made the decision to end its program to develop hydrogen fuel cell technology,” explains Jean-Philippe Imparato, Chief Operating Officer for extended Europe. “The hydrogen market remains a niche segment, without perspectives of economic profitability in the medium term. We must make clear and responsible choices to guarantee our competitiveness and meet the expectations of our customers thanks to our electric and hybrid offer for both private vehicles and for light utilities. »»
This decision will have no impact on the workforce of Stellantis production sites. Hydrogen research & development activities will be redirected to other projects.
The current state of the hydrogen segment also represents financial challenges for all stakeholders. In this context, Stellantis has initiated discussions with Symbio shareholders in order to assess the impacts of the current situation and to best preserve the interests of Symbio, in compliance with the commitments of each party.
